How are Scholarships awarded?

Applications are scored anonymously by a volunteer Awards Committee.  Our committee considers a variety of qualities including work experience, school and community service activities and academic record.  The selection process is objective and nondiscriminatory making scholarships available to a wide range of deserving students planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution.

How and when are scholarship awards distributed?

Scholarship recipients are notified in early May of their selection to receive an award.  Our awards ceremony is held in mid-May at Norwell High School.  Scholarship funds are distributed directly to the student's school, usually before the start of the following semester.

What type of recognition will be given?

Each recipient of a Dollars for Scholars scholarship will be  recognized for his/her accomplishments at the awards program held in the spring.  Public announcements are made through the local media.  Faculty, parents, and financial supporters of the Dollars for Scholars program are also recognized.

How are scholarship funds raised?

There are various avenues of collecting funds for scholarship distributions.  The largest portion of our scholarship funds are made possible by donations from local businesses, individuals and philanthropic groups.  Additional funds come from our endowment fund and fund raiser events such as our annual phone-a-thon or various other fund raisers through out the year.

What is the endowment fund?

The endowment fund is composed of endowment fund accounts that earn interest and dividends. Donations are maintained as principal in the designated account and only the earnings are distributed as awards.

An account can be established in memory of a loved one or in the name of a living individual, a club, organization, business or a high school class.
