For a donation of $500 or more, a scholarship may be given in the name of your choice.  Please contact Avon Dollars for Scholars if you would like to give a named scholarship.  Listed below are a sample of some of the named scholarships:

NEW FOR 2018:
 
THE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND STEM SCHOLARSHIP:
 
This scholarship has been donated anonymously by an Avon Family.  This scholarship is awarded to an Avon High School student with an excellent academic record who plans to pursue a major in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering or math) at a very competitive college or university (Ivy League or similar).  Preference will be given to a student who is also a National Merit Scholarship finalist or winner.  
 
ROTARY OF AVON-CANTON CAREER BOUND SCHOLARSHIP:
 
​Members of the local Rotary Club started the Avon Dollars for Scholars Chapter in 1978.  This scholarship is awarded to a student planning to attend a trade school, pursue an apprenticeship or start or continue training in a career or technical education program.  It may also be awarded to a student pursuing an Associates Degree (2-year college degree program.
 
KENNETH BIRK, PEGGY ROELL AND KATHY ZIROLLI HONORARY SCHOLARSHIPS GIVEN BY HOUSTON PUTNAM LOWRY:
 
These scholarships are given to deserving students who have shown a commitment to academic or athletic excellence and/or community involvement.  Houston Putnam Lowry has donated these scholarships to recognize the service of Kenneth Birk, Peggy Roell and Kathy Zirolli to the community as members of the Avon Board of Education and to benefit Avon's students-- a win-win!
 
AMICI ITALIAN GRILL SCHOLARSHIP:
 
This scholarship is given by Sam and John Vrakas, owners of the popular Avon restuarant. Sam and John have been gracious hosts for our dine-out events and generously contribute this scholarship annually to help an Avon senior further his or her education in college.

 

ROTARY OF AVON-CANTON SCHOLARSHIPS:
 
Members of the local Rotary started the Avon Dollars for Scholars Chapter in 1978.  Yearly, the Rotarians fund 3 scholarships for both college bound and career bound students.  Rotary's motto is "Service Above Self".

 

AVON DENTAL GROUP SCHOLARSHIP:
 
This scholarship is awarded to a student who wishes to pursue a degree in Biology or the Medical Sciences.  

 

AVON GIRL SCOUTS SCHOLARSHIP:
 
The Avon Girl Scouts Scholarship recognizes a current or former Girl Scout based on her leadership skills and service to the community.

 

AVON LIONS CHARITIES SCHOLARSHIP:
 
Since 1951, the men and women of the Avon Lions Club have served the community, country and world in the challenge of vision-related needs, disaster relief and improvement of quality of life.  The recipient of this scholarship demonstrates commitment to these needs through actions in providing service to the community. "The student shall, in addition to active membership in the AHS LEO Club, have provided service to the community in the area of vision related needs; disaster relief; improvement of quality of life; or other community services above and beyond any community service required as part of the school curriculum".

 

AVON PRIME MEATS SCHOLARSHIP:
 
Avon Prime Meats of Avon has given gracious support to Avon Dollars for Scholars activities and their annual fundraising efforts have made this scholarship available this year.

 

DAVID AND LISA BAUER AND BEARINGSTAR INSURANCE SCHOLARSHIP:
 
David and Lisa Bauer, along with their company, Bearingstar Insurance, give two scholarships to deserving Avon seniors.

 

MICHAEL BRIGHENTI '74 SCHOLARSHIP:

 

Michael graduated from Avon High School in 1974 and became a successful Avon Businessman. He wants to make a college education possible for current Avon seniors.

 

IN HONOR OF CLAIRE FISHER BONTI '08 SCHOLARSHIP:

 

Claire Fisher Bonti was a 2008 graduate of Avon High school.  Her scholarship recognizes a student who has worked hard to persevere when confronted with one or more obstacles, such as medical, family or personal.   In addition, the recipient demonstrates a strong commitment to the well-being of others and to the betterment of the community.

 

RICHARD KRUSE CURIOSITY, INSPIRATION, INNOVATION, ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:

 

Given in honor of Richard Kruse, this scholarship is awarded to a student who exhibits a love of learning, has a strong moral character, is hard working, and intends to pursue a degree in math, engineering, or the sciences.

 

SAXE FAMILY CREW SCHOLARSHIPS:

 

The Saxe Family Crew Scholarship recognizes a student who has a passion for crew.  This scholarship will be awarded to a male student who intends on rowing/coxing at the collegiate level (including club) or has participated in the AHS crew team for at least 4 season (not necessarily consecutive) and is a Scholar Athlete. The student should demonstrate the qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork and maturity. A recommendation for the AHS Crew coach will be required.

 

CARMON FUNERAL HOME & FAMILY CENTER OF AVON SCHOLARSHIP:

 

The Carmon Family scholarship to a graduating student who is pursuing a career in a care-giving profession based on academic excellence and community service.

 

DUBIEL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:

 

Richard Dubiel, an Avon High School graduate, Class of 1973, and former member of the Board of Directors of Avon Dollars for Scholars has established this scholarship along with his aunt, Madelyn Dubiel, who was a teacher for many years at Huckleberry Hill Elementary School in Avon.  The recipient is a student pursuing a degree in engineering or education or plans to attend Trinity College in Hartford.

 

FARMINGTON BANK SCHOLARSHIP:

 

Farmington Bank not only contributes a yearly scholarship but also supports one of their Branch Managers to serve in the position of Avon Dollars for Scholars Treasurer.  Farmington Savings Bank continues to demonstrate their outstanding commitment to the community.

 

FRIENDS OF AVON MUSIC EDUCATION (FAME) SCHOLARSHIP:
 
This FAME scholarship award is given to an Avon High School student who has consistently demonstrated their passion and dedication to Music throughout their high school experience.  The recipient shall submit a letter of recommendation from the Music Department.  The award will go to a student who has actively participated in the Band, Orchestra, Choral or Musical Theater programs at Avon High School.  The recipients application and essay should reflect their passion for music and the impact that the Avon Music Program has had on their high school experience.

 

GARDEN CLUB OF AVON SCHOLARSHIP: 

 

Organized in 1944, the Garden Club of Avon aspires to stimulate interest in gardening and related activities to beautify the community.  They are responsible for beautifying the grounds at various town buildings. This scholarship recognizes a student who plans to pursue studies of horticulture, plant biology or environmental studies.

 

JAMES A. MACNEIL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: 

 

Awarded to a student with outstanding academic achievement, a passion for science and who is pursuing a college degree in the natural sciences such as Biology, Chemistry, Physicas, Geology or Astronomy.  The student must be ranked in the top 10% of the graduating class and have a combined SAT (Critical Reading and Math) above 1300.  A 250-300 word essay on:"Why I wish to pursue a degree in Science" is required as well as a recommendation from a science teacher.  This scholarship is for $2,500 in the first year of an accredited four year college.  A second payment of $2,500 upon entering Senior Year if the degree is in a natural science.  

 

DAVID & MARDELLE PEÑA FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF THE AVON-CANTON VFW POST 3272: 

 

Given by David and Mardelle Peña and their family in honor of the members of the Avon-Canton VFW Post 3272. This scholarship is offered to a student pursuing some type of military focus in their college studies.

 

RALPH & ELLEN GOBELL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:

 

The Gobell family is grateful to live in a town as nice as Avon.  Ralph and Ellen's children, Lauren and Brenden, attended Avon schools from kindergarten through high school, as did Ellen.  This scholarship is just one way for them to give back to their community.  It recognizes a student who has been active in community service and excelled in academic achievement.                                                           

 

CARYL & LEONARD GOLDBERG EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP:

 

Caryl Goldberg, has been a teacher for 30 years, with the past 15 of them here in Avon serving as the district's Coordinator of Preschool Special Education Services. Her long career has been dedicated to providing students with the highest quality educational opportunities available and building meaningful parent partnerships. This scholarship is given to a student pursuing a career in teaching at any level in order to help support the continued development of this important profession.

 

CHRISTINE PAPPALARDO GREIF SCHOLARSHIP:

 

This scholarship honors Christine Greif, Class of 1987, who has overcome tremendous odds since sustaining a traumatic brain injury caused by a drunk driver.  She was a scholar athlete and recognized for her community service work at Avon High School.  She majored in English at Dickinson College.  Since her injury, even though she has limited use of only one hand, she draws and creates note cards from her artwork.  She has donated three works of art to Avon Dollars for Scholars for note cards, including "Climb the Tree of Knowledge and Follow Your Dreams", "Education Lights the Way" and "Dogwoods".   

 

STEVE & GWEN HAHN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:

 

This award has been established by Steven and Gwendolyn Hahn, members of the Board of Directors of Avon Dollars for Scholars.  The Hahn family believes very strongly in giving back.  With the cost of higher education, it is their desire to help out where possible. This scholarship is for a student who demonstrates a high level of dedication to the community through charitable activity and service as well as an exceptional level of academic effort.

 

JACOBSON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:

 

This scholarship was established by Barry Jacobson, a member of the Board of Directors of Avon Dollars for Scholars and his wife, Mari.  It recognizes a student with strong academic achievement and a passion for the arts or athletics.

 

DIANE LIEBERFARB SCHOLARSHIP: 

 

The Diane Lieberfarb Scholarship was initiated by a group of friends in honor of her birthday.  It continues to be supported by family and friends to recognize a student who epitomizes charisma, character, compassion and courage.

 

"GIRLS NIGHT IN" SCHOLARSHIP:

 

This scholarship, conceived by Emma Feeley and Rachel Spivak, is given by a group of women and their young daughters who hold an annual neighborhood tea party to honor a female student.

 

THE ALL-GAS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:
 
The Pollack Family has proudly owned and operated The All-GAS Companies since 1941, and the fourth generation owner is a resident of Avon and an Avon High School Alum.  ALL-GAS provides propane to Connecticut's homes and businesses, as well as compressed gases for medical and industrial clients.  This scholarship will ideally support a student pursuing a career in the heating, cooling or plumbing trades, or a scholar with a chemistry or science-based focus.
 
THE DAVID AND MARDELLE PEÑA FAMILY SCHOLARSHIPS:

 

Given by David and Mardelle Peña and family, who have been extremely active in the Avon community and generous in giving back. There are two scholarships; one recognizes a student who has actively and extensively been involved in broad community service; the other recognizes a student pursuing a degree in the performing arts.
